A Little Reminder, Especially Now . . .

Since I write about animals, I thought it would be a good time for a quick reminder about Canine Heartworm preventive and Canine and  Feline Flea medications. In the Summer months with the increased humidity, it becomes a necessity to remember monthly medications to keep our animals, and ourselves, free from discomfort caused by flea bites and possible illness.

My personal choice of Heartworm preventive for my dogs is Trifexis, since it also provides flea medication in the same tablet.

Another choice for dogs in flea medication is a product called Capstar. This begins killing adult fleas within 30 minutes! Unfortunately it doesn’t last a month like other medications.  Capstar is also available as a feline medication.

My choice for my cats is a product called Revolution.

Some non-chemical options for dealing with fleas include vacuuming areas where pets sleep and hang out several times a day. Also, bathing your pets with special flea killing products is also a big help. Baking soda used on floors and carpets can be effective against eggs and larva, and adding salt can also be helpful. Diatomaceous earth is another in-home option but the dust can cause respiratory problems. Washing clothes and rugs and then drying them on a high heat setting is effective in killing adult fleas.
