Cap’n Jack and Scary Noises

I’m sure I’m not the only one with a dog like Jack. He is absolutely terrified of fireworks and loud thunderstorms. If he’s outside when he hears something, he immediately runs for the door. When he’s inside, he starts panting and following me around the house, almost gluing himself to my legs! Two years ago, I bought him a Thunder shirt and it has helped him a great deal. Occasionally I have given him Benadryl to calm him down. I wish these solutions worked for every dog, but they don’t always. I have heard of calming tablets, but haven’t tried those yet.

I think his fears may have started when he was a 4 month old puppy. It was New Year’s Eve and he was outside by himself when the fireworks started. It must have been a little bit windy because the screen door to the back porch had blown shut and he couldn’t get to the back door right away. We heard his bark and quickly let him in.

Since then, we make sure he’s been outside frequently before the fireworks start or a thunderstorm is heading our way.
